Youth Ministry - Apr. 29, 2012

April 27, 2012 – The Youth Group gathered at Immaculate Conception Hall for a potluck dinner.  We were entertained with a video put together by Kalei Kossow of our trip to Anaheim, California, at “Youth Day 2012.”  This was an opportunity for our families back home to get a glimpse of what we did.  Many pictures were taken.  Our trip was very full with little rest for most of us.  The Youth were inspired by our keynote speaker, Mike Patin (mikepatin.com) and Paul J. Kim (pjkmusic.com), who presented in the afternoon workshop session.  A few of our Youth shared their experiences about the trip and are encouraged to think that other Youth may attend our next trip in 2014.

As we come to an end of the school year and into summer, the Youth Group will be meeting weekly at Immaculate Conception Hall at 5pm for the months of June and July.  Fr. Anthony Rapozo will be joining our Youth Group Ministry to add more faith-based learning for the Youth.  We welcome Fr. Anthony.  Our schedule for the month of May is listed below.

Next meetings:

May 4th
Immaculate Conception 5pm

May 18th
Immaculate Conception 5pm “Potluck”

The Youth Group gathered after Stations of the Cross last Friday evening. Afterwards, the 13 teens who attended Youth Day on March 22nd at RE Congress in Los Angeles continued to share their experiences while the other members of our Youth Ministry listened. This year’s Youth Day theme was “Called Out - Challenge Accepted” which was led by youth from different parishes in the Diocese of Orange County, California. Our Youth were among 16,000 youth who came to participate from around the world. They were impressed by how many teens come together to celebrate and share one spirit in Christ. The keynote speaker, Mike Palin, shared his thoughts on how youth might live out their call in their everyday lives. The workshop they all attended was done by Paul J. Kim. He moved the kids with his music and ability to relate to teens.

St. Michael’s Youth called out “challenge accepted” in the large gathering and they participated in the discussions afterwards to understand what it means for them. This experience will help guide our Youth to a better understanding of what service is, and I am hopeful the message will become part of their lives.

Many thanks to our parents and parishioners from all of our North Kona Catholic ‘Ohana for their support in making it all this possible. This has definitely been a journey to remember.

If you would like to view our journey to LA, we are gathering at Immaculate Conception Hall on April 20th from 5pm–9pm. Potluck dinner; space is limited.

Aloha,
Thelma Bacxa

Youth Ministry - Mar. 4, 2012

The Youth participated with the rest of the parish in the Friday Stations of the Cross and simple Lenten meal. They served as Cross Bearers and served the simple meal after Stations. The Youth Minister held a brief meeting with the Youth Group after the meal to discuss a number of things in which they are involved, including the trip to Anaheim for the L.A. Congress, and rehearsal for Youth Mass. Thank you to all of the parents and volunteers whose commitment to Youth Ministry has not gone unnoticed.

Youth Ministry - Feb. 26, 2012

On February 17, 2012, the Youth gathered at St. Michael’s at 4:30pm.  The goal for the evening was to continue service in our community by doing Street Outreach to young teens on the streets.  The group walked from St. Michael’s Church to Honl’s Beach on Alii Drive.  The Youth Minister talked with a few people who recognized her, while the Youth observed.  A highlight of this activity for the Youth was an encounter with a homeless young man, whom the Youth Group helped last year.  He walked back to St. Michael’s with the group and during dinner he shared a little more about how he is surviving on the street.  He quotes:  “You should see what happens after 11pm at night when more homeless are on the streets looking for food in the garbage bins or cans and bottles for recycle.” The members of the Youth Group seem to have a much better understanding of what it is like to be a teen on the street.  This was a very successful evening as our Youth got an idea of what goes on in our community.  Thanks, also, to Shirley David for the article she wrote about the Youth.  We were proud to see the picture and read about our Youth Group in the Hawaii Catholic Herald.
